Writing can be a very lonely practice, and it’s often a struggle to hold onto the discipline and drive to continue when you lack a circle of sympathetic friends or colleagues to encourage you. Having come from a working-class background to find a foothold in an industry that can seem small, elitist and impenetrable to an outsider, I know how essential it is to have a trusted reader in order to improve technique and gain the confidence to pursue a writing career, or even simply to finish a manuscript.
I work as a mentor with both new writers and more experienced authors, helping them develop their stories, and edit their work, focussing on structure, character and plot.
